Google announced today that it has identified the cause of the recently discovered texting bug and intends to fix it. The bug results in texts which appear to have been sent correctly going to the wrong recipient. Google has not confirmed when the fix will be released or what form it will take.

The company reports that it has identified two separate problems. In very rare cases, texts are indeed being sent to the wrong recipient – a fix for this problem is in the pipeline. Many users are, however, experiencing a different problem: if a user selects an existing text message while the messaging app is still loading, it sometimes opens a different text. If the user fails to notice this and hits send, the wrong text will be sent. This problem is also reported to occur rarely. This can of course be alleviated by reading the text before sending or just waiting a little when opening the messaging app.
