According to the latest numbers from StatCounter, Google's Chrome browser has narrowly overtaken Mozilla's Firefox in terms of global usage. StatCounter says that 25.69% of users are using Chrome and 25.23% are using Firefox, with both trailing behind Microsoft's Internet Explorer at 40.63%. Interestingly, Microsoft's share of the market rose slightly from the previous month, but combined, the two open source browsers do hold just over 50% market share globally.

StatCounter compiles its monthly reports on browser market share trends by analysing a sample of 15 billion page views a month on its free analytics network. In the USA, Internet Explorer was more dominant with a 50.66% share of market, Firefox held second place with 20.09% and Chrome was close behind at 17.3%; the US figures see a upswing in IE usage, with Firefox use falling over the past two years and Chrome's rise over that time stalling.

In the UK, StatCounter reports that IE's share is down to 42.82%, Chrome comes in second at 24.82%, followed by Firefox at 20.56%. Chrome overtook Firefox in the UK statistics in July, and has held onto that position. Meanwhile, Germany is still the home of Firefox dominance where it has 52.26% share, while Microsoft's IE has only 25.16% share and Chrome is down at 12.95%.
