Google reports >30% of Android devices now running 2.2

Google has published an updated breakdown of the number of active devices running a given version of its Android mobile operating system. According to the Platform Versions device dashboard on the Android Developer portal, more than one third of all Android devices in circulation are now running version 2.2 of the OS – an increase of nearly 30% over early August of this year.

The company also says that Android 2.1 devices now account for 40.4% of devices, a decrease of over 19% compared to August. Android 1.5 and 1.6 devices now make up 9.7% and 16.4% of devices respectively, while only 0.1% of devices are still running obsolete versions, including version 1.1, 2.0 and 2.0.1.

Announced at this year's Google I/O developer conference and released at the end of June, Android 2.2 "Froyo" is the latest stable version of Google's open source mobile OS. It first appeared on the company's Nexus One smartphone, but has since been released as an update for a number of existing devices, such as HTC's GSM Desire phone, the HTC EVO 4G and Motorola's popular Droid phone on US CDMA carrier Verizon. While some new devices are still shipping with older versions of Android and have yet to receive updates to 2.1 or 2.2, several new and upcoming phones like the HTC Desire HD and Desire Z will include Android 2.2 when they ship.

The next major release of Android, version 3.0 code named "Gingerbread", will reportedly require at least a 1 GHz processor, a 3.5-inch display and 512 MB of RAM. Devices that don't meet the new requirements will likely remain on either version 2.1 or 2.2 of Android. An official release date or specific details for Gingerbread have yet to be confirmed by Google.
