Google has announced that it has open sourced Liquid Galaxy, the company's Google Earth environment composed of eight 55-inch LCD screens. Liquid Galaxy is designed to be an immersive, surround view that covers a users entire field of vision with images and 3D content, such as buildings, landscapes and various landmarks, from the company's Google Earth application.

According to Google Software Engineer Jason Holt, Liquid Galaxy set-ups can be found in the company's offices all around the world and there is a Liquid Galaxy on display at the Tech Museum in California. Google has also displayed temporary installations at a number of conferences this year across the globe for the public to try. Holt says that, because they couldn't "just couldn’t bring it to enough people", the developers have decided to include all of the features that make Liquid Galaxy possible into the latest version of Google Earth and release all of he supporting work, including their Ubuntu sysadmin scripts and the mechanical design of the custom frames, as open source. For those users who don't want to build their own, Google says that it's possible to buy a complete system from its supplier – End Point.

More information about Liquid Galaxy can be found on the project's Google Code page and a video of a Liquid Galaxy set-up is available on YouTube. Liquid Galaxy is licensed under version 2.0 of the Apache Licence.
