Google has announced Google Blog Converters, an open source project that aims to help users move their blog content between the major blogging platforms. The announcement, attributed to the Data Liberation Front, comes after the Google team's success in making an import/export tool for Blogger available. The first release of the Blog Converters is made up of Python libraries and scripts which can convert between Blogger, LiveJournal, MovableType and WordPress export formats. Also included are templates to host the conversion tools on Google's App Engine.

In the future, Google plans to add support for BlogML, an open XML format for blog content, and also a mechanism for extracting content from blogging platforms that don't support import or export. The project is available under the Apache 2.0 licence and is hosted on Google Code.
