Google chooses Jetty for App Engine
Initially, Google's App Engine engineers selected Apache Tomcat as their webserver / servlet container of choice. However, they've now chosen to switch to Jetty instead. InfoQ recently interviewed the developers at Webtide, the company behind Jetty, to find out why Google went with Jetty.
According to the team at Webtide, one of the main reasons that Jetty was selected was for its size. Webtide say that, when dealing with the cloud, size is very important and every MB saved per server when running tens of thousands of instances of Jetty, as Google does, sometimes tens of GBs, means that more memory is available for applications. The developers also note that Jetty is both flexible and expandable to fit Google's needs. When asked if there were any additional plans for Google and Jetty, the developers said, "Google keep their plans pretty close to their chest, so we don't really know".
