Version 2.2 of the Google Web Toolkit (GWT) now supports HTML5-specific functions such as <canvas> elements, which allow for dynamic rendering of 2D shapes and bitmap images within a defined area of a web page, and for the <video> and <audio> tags. These are are still experimental and may change in subsequent releases. Greater control over cell widgets has been introduced with a new CellTable API. This enables direct control over such details as cell width – previously, developers had to write their own custom code to achieve the same ends.

This features an integrated version of the Ajax user interface designer, GWT Designer which adds more configuration options, and works with extensions such as GWT-Ext, GXT and SmartGWT. With this new release the toolkit no longer supports Java 1.5. The Plugin also supports Google App Engine development and is compatible with Eclipse 3.6.

Further information can be found in the official release announcement and in the release notes. Google Web Toolkit 2.2 is available for download from the project's Google Code page and is licensed under version 2.0 of the Apache license.
