Google Summer of Code 2012 announced

At FOSDEM 2012, which took place this past weekend, Google Open Source Programs Office (OSPO) member Carol Smith officially announced the company's eighth annual Google Summer of Code (GSoC) event.

Each year since 2005, Google has offered university students stipends to write and develop code for various open source projects as part of its GSoC event, which takes place over a period of three months. According to the 2012 GSoC timeline, mentoring organisations from the FOSS community will have from 27 February to 9 March to apply to take part in this year's event; the student application period will open on 26 March.

Google says that over the past seven years, 6,000 students from more than 90 countries have completed the GSoC program. "Our goal is to help these students pursue academic challenges over the summer break while they create and release open source code for the benefit of all", said Smith. Last year, over 1,100 university students participated by writing code for 175 open source organisations, 50 of which were new to GSoC.
