Google Summer of Code Google has published a list of the accepted mentoring organisations for this year's Google Summer of Code (GSoC) event. According to a post on the Google Open Source Blog by Stephanie Taylor, there were a total 417 mentoring applications for the 7th annual event, which were then narrowed to just 175 open source projects – 50 of the projects are new to GSoC.

Accepted mentors include the Blender Foundation, the CERN Virtual Machine, the Debian Project, the Django Software Foundation, the EFF / Tor Project, FFmpeg / Libav, the GNU Project, the KDE Project, LibreOffice, Mozilla, openSUSE and many others. However, some mentoring organisations which took part last year, such as Facebook, Ubuntu and the LXDE Foundation, are absent this year. According to the program timeline, Google will begin accepting student applications on 28 March.

Each year Google seeks students and mentors from the FLOSS community to take part in it's annual GSoC event, which takes place over a period of three months. The GSoC contests offer university students stipends to write and develop code for various open source projects. Over the past six years, 4,500 students from more than 85 countries have completed the GSoC program with support from over 300 mentoring organisations.

More details about the Google Summer of Code 2011 program can be found on the GSoC 2011 site – a full overview of GSoC program statistics is provided on the Program Information for Past Years page.
