GSoC Logo Google has announced that the deadline for mentoring organisations to apply for this year's Google Summer of Code (GSoC) event is Friday, 11 March, at 23:00 GMT. Open source projects interested in applying (sign in required) for the company's seventh annual Google Summer of Code event can now do so; a Mentor Manual is provided.

Each year Google seeks students and mentors from the FLOSS community to take part in it's annual GSoC event, which takes place over a period of three months. The GSoC contests offer university students stipends to write and develop code for various open source projects. According to Open Source Team member Stephanie Taylor, over the past six years, 4,500 students from more than 85 countries have completed the GSoC program with support from over 300 mentoring organisations.

More details about the Google Summer of Code 2011 program can be found on the GSoC 2011 site. A final list of approved organisations will be posted on 18 March and a full overview of GSoC program statistics is provided on the Program Information for Past Years page. According to the program timeline, Google will begin accepting student applications on 28 March.
