GSoC Logo Google has announced that the deadline for student applications for this year's Google Summer of Code (GSoC) event is Friday 8 April at 19:00 UTC. According to Stephanie Taylor from Google's Open Source Programs Office, over the past ten days, "students have had the opportunity to review the Ideas pages for this year’s 175 accepted projects and to research which projects they would like to contribute to for this year’s Google Summer of Code."

Accepted students will receive a total of $5,000 from Google for participation in the program and the mentoring organisations receive $500. Those interested in applying must be full or part-time students and over 18 years of age by 25 April, 2011. According to the program time-line, all student proposals must be matched up with a mentor by 22 April at 7:00 UTC, after which the accepted student proposals will be announced three days later on 25 April.

Each year Google seeks students and mentors from the free and open source software community to take part in it's annual GSoC event, which takes place over a period of three months. The GSoC contests offer university students stipends to write and develop code for various open source projects. Over the past six years, 4,500 students from more than 85 countries have completed the GSoC program with support from over 300 mentoring organisations.

Details about the Google Summer of Code 2011 program can be found on the GSoC 2011 site – an historical overview of GSoC program statistics is provided on the Program Information for Past Years page.
