Google Summer of Code logo In a post on the Open Source at Google blog, Google has announced that it has published a list of accepted students for this year's Google Summer of Code (GSoC) event. According to Stephanie Taylor from Google's Open Source Programs Office, this year a total of 1,116 students have been accepted for the annual event, up from 1,025 in 2010.

These students will be paired up with just one of 175 open source projects and, according to the program timeline, students will begin coding for their GSoC projects on 23 May – the list of accepted mentoring organisations was published in March. Accepted students will receive a total of $5,000 from Google for participation in the program, while the mentoring organisations receive $500.

Each year Google seeks students and mentors from the FLOSS community to take part in it's annual GSoC event, which takes place over a period of three months. The GSoC contests offer university students stipends to write and develop code for various open source projects. Over the past six years, 4,500 students from more than 85 countries have completed the GSoC program with support from over 300 mentoring organisations.

Details about the Google Summer of Code 2011 program can be found on the GSoC 2011 site – a full overview of GSoC program statistics is provided on the Program Information for Past Years page.
