Google Summer of Code 2010: Mentoring application deadline

Google has announced that the deadline for mentoring organisations to apply for this year's Google Summer of Code (GSoC) event is Friday, the 12th of March at 23:00 GMT. Each year Google seeks mentors from the FLOSS community to take part in it's annual GSoC, an event that takes place over the period of three months.

The GSoC contests offer university students stipends to write and develop code for various open source projects. According to Leslie Hawthorn, Program Manager for Google's Open Source Team, over the last five years, Google has successfully paired up nearly 3,400 students with more than 3,000 mentors from a number of open source organisations. In total, more than 8 million lines of source code have been written and over $20 million in funding has been distributed towards open source development.

Last year, for example, just under 2,000 mentors from over 60 countries participated and over 85% of the 1,000 student participants passed their final evaluations. Overall, the students worked to improve the code bases of 150 projects, ranging from Wikimedia to Eclipse and openSUSE.
