Google: Android Market has 70k apps

Android Market Following unofficial reports that the Android Market had surpassed 100,000 apps and more than 1 billion downloads, Google has confirmed that its Android Market for mobile applications now contains more than 70,000 applications. The milestone comes only four months after the market reached 30,000 apps in March, up from just 16,000 in mid-December of last year.

The news, announced as part of the company's second quarter 2010 financial results, shows tremendous growth in apps for the open source mobile operating system. Once again, the company said that it's currently activating 160,000 Android devices every day, up from 100,000 in May of this year.

However, in recent weeks the Android Market has come under fire from a number of developers, including Jon Hech Johansen, also known as DVD-Jon. Johansen said that , "Google does far too little curation of the Android Market, and it shows." The developer criticised the fact that, for example, while the market is available in more than 45 countries, developers can only offer paid applications in thirteen of them.
