The Gnome development team has released the latest version of the famous desktop environment for Linux. It is less spectacular than KDE 4.0, which appeared after much delay in January with not only a new appearance but also a new architecture; by comparison, the latest Gnome release 2.22 offers only minor improvements.

The developers have added some new applications in Gnome 2.22, including the Cheese photo software, the VNC-client Vinagre and a C/C++ development environment. Others, like the Window manager Metacity which performs 3D effects, has aquired some new functionality. The release notes give detailed information about all the changes and new features. Anybody wishing to see Gnome 2.22 in action can download and creat a LiveCD specially for this purpose.
