Gentoo Logo With Gentoo Linux 11, the Gentoo developers have frozen their distribution's current state of development and made it available in form of two Live-DVDs of about 2.5GB each. The x86 version contains a hybrid system that can either boot a 32-bit or a 64-bit kernel; the amd64 variant only works on 64-bit x86 processors. Other architectures such as ARM, IA64, PPC and SPARC are only supported via installation media that provide a minimal Gentoo system; typically for Gentoo, users compile the applications they require. For this purpose, the distribution provides coordinated and constantly updated source code packages.

Gentoo Linux 11 contains version 2.6.37 of the Linux kernel, Glibc 2.12.2 and GCC 4.5.2. The available desktops include KDE 4.6, GNOME 2.32, Xfce 4.8 and various window managers. The Live-DVD offers a comprehensive selection of desktop applications including OpenOffice.org 3.2.1, GIMP 2.6.11, Inkscape 0.48.1, Firefox 3.6.13, Thunderbird 3.1.7, Pidgin 2.7.10, Amarok 2.4 and RC4 of MPlayer 1.0.
