Gentoo Linux Logo The Gentoo development team has released a new LiveDVD edition of version 11.2 of its Linux distribution. Based on version 3.0 of the Linux kernel with Gentoo patches, the Gentoo Linux 11.2 LiveDVD offers a choice of desktop environments and window managers, including GNOME 3.0.0, KDE 4.7.0, Xfce 4.8, Enlightenment 1.0.8 and Openbox 3.5.0.

The 2.6 GB LiveDVD offers a number of built-in applications, such as LibreOffice 3.3.3, GIMP 2.6.11, Inkscape 0.48.2 and Blender 2.57. Other bundled programs include Firefox 5.0, Chromium 13.0, Thunderbird 5.0, Pidgin 2.9.0, Amarok 2.4.3 and KDevelop 4.2.3. System package updates include Python 2.7.2 and 3.2, Perl 5.12.4 and GCC 4.5.2.

According to the developers, the new LiveDVD has been released "to celebrate the continued collaboration between Gentoo users and developers." The project usually works with rolling updates: every few weeks, the developers release updated installation CDs that serve as a basis for new Gentoo installations. Users then keep their systems current by installing regular online updates.

Further information about the LiveDVD release, including a detailed list of included packages, can be found in the official release announcement. The LiveDVD edition of Gentoo Linux 11.2 is available to download for 32- and 64-bit systems as an ISO image file.
