Project developers have released version 2008.0 of Gentoo, a Linux distribution that users self-compile to support their individual hardware requirements. By incorporating kernel version 2.6.24, Gentoo 2008.0 supports more hardware than the previous version released with kernel 2.6.19 more than a year ago. The revised installer sets up the system without network access via the Ebuild Tree contained on the CD. Various bug fixes in the installer ensure better handling of extended partitions and logical volumes.

Users can find a CD image, a minimal CD image and an installable live CD on the project's download page. To save space, the live CD no longer contains Gnome, offering version 4.4.2 of the streamlined Xfce desktop environment instead. The Gentoo project has postponed producing a live DVD in favour of launching the release, but may provide the live DVD at a later date.
