The developers of the multimedia Live CD distribution GeeXboX have released a new version of their software which adds live TV functionality. After one year of work and the addition of up to 140MB of additional firmware and drivers to the distribution, users of GeeXboX 3.0 are now able to watch and record live television from DVB sources.

The distribution uses XBMC 11 as a media player frontend and the latest version adds several improvements; these include better remote control support and the ability to play back Full HD video on PandaBoard and Cubox hardware. Supported architectures include 32- and 64-bit systems and a variety of ARM SoCs such as the TI OMAP4, NVIDIA Tegra 2 and others.

GeeXboX 3.0 is available as a bootable ISO image that can be burned to CDs or used on bootable USB sticks. The project's web site includes documentation which explains this process and also includes a section on the newly added PVR functionality.
