GeeXboX Logo The GeeXboX developers have announced the availability of the second alpha of version 2.0 of their small embedded Linux distribution aimed at Home Theatre PCs (HTPC) and media centres. The latest development release addresses a number of bugs from last month's first alpha and includes several changes.

GeeXboX 2.0 Alpha 2 features the latest 2.6.33 Linux kernel, the 0.5.0 development build of the Enna open source media center application and corrects a playback issue that affected OGG files. Additionally, the LiveCD and Win32 installers that allow users to install GeeXboX have been fixed and should now be working properly. Other notable changes include upgraded NVIDIA graphics drivers, Kernel Mode Settings (KMS) for ATI, Intel and NVIDIA drivers, and the restoration of internationalisation support.

The developers note that an initial port to ARM architecture is coming soon. As with all development releases, use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised.

More details about the LiveCD-based distribution release can be found in the release announcement. GeeXboX 2.0 Alpha 2 is available to download for 32 and 64-bit systems. Alternatively, a Windows installer is also available that lets users install the distribution without having to re-partition their disks. All three download links initiate a direct download of the file. The latest stable release of GeeXboX is versoin 1.2.4.
