gartner According to Ken Dulaney, an analyst at the market research firm Gartner, Google's open source Android mobile operating system will be the number two smartphone OS within three years. Currently Android makes up less than two per cent of all smartphones. Dulaney estimates that Android will be responsible for 14.5 per cent of the market by 2012, beating Apple, Microsoft and RIM and second only to Nokia.

Nokia and its Symbian OS would, according to Dulaney, still hold the number one position with approximately 39 per cent, just under two-fifths, of the market. Third place would go to Apple's iPhone OS with just under 14 per cent, followed by Windows Mobile and Blackberry, each with slightly over 12 per cent. Gartner says that Palm's webOS would come in at seventh place with about 2.1 per cent.

In order to meet Dulaney's prediction, Android's market share would have to increase sevenfold in a similar way to how the iPhone has grown since 2008.
