GNU logo The GNU project's implementation of the ed line editor has been updated to version 1.6. The update to the "8 bit clean, more-or-less POSIX compliant" version of the standard Unix editor sees several bugs fixed, including the displaying of null characters with the "l" command, incorrectly setting the modified flag when reading files into empty buffers, and preventing NUL characters in regular expressions.

Other changes include ed signalling an error if it can't create a shell process, flushing stdout/stderr before reading new commands, and the program now has a man page which documents all command line options. The copyright of one Andrew L. Moore has been restored after it was discovered that he granted some permissions but never assigned copyright to the FSF. Source code for GNU ed is licensed under the GPLv3 and can be downloaded from a GNU project mirror or directly from download.savannah.gnu.org.
