GNOME: Firefox extensions and wider availability
With the recent release of GNOME 3.6, developers and distributions are making updated versions of their packages available and applications such as Firefox are getting improved integration into the GNOME desktop.
- The GNOME developers have published a three add-on collection for Firefox which is designed to make Firefox behave in a more GNOME-like way. The three add-ons include the Adwaita theme which visually styles Firefox for GNOME 3's desktop environment, HTitle, an experimental add-on which removes the title bar when the Firefox window is maximised, and FxButton, which adds an "app button" that drops down a menu with all Firefox menu options (and hides the Firefox button).
- Users of openSUSE 12.2 can now make use of GNOME 3.6 with instructions now available on how to use the previously announced repository for the distribution.
- The Fedora developers have placed GNOME 3.6 in the update-testing repository for Fedora 18 Alpha. Ubuntu's GNOME remix has been released as a beta, based on the recently released second beta of the forthcoming Ubuntu 12.10. According to the release notes, while most applications are based on the GNOME 3.6 release candidate, some apps (such as Aisleriot, Nautilus, System Settings and Totem) will not be upgraded to 3.6. Those apps are available from the GNOME 3 PPA.
- If a user wants to try out GNOME 3.6 without loading packages into their existing Linux installation, the GNOME Live ISO image is available to download. Designed purely for testing, the GNOME Live ISO is a bootable image that can be transferred to a CD or USB stick and is based on the development branch of Fedora 18.
