GNOME Logo The GNOME project has released development version 2.91.6 of GNOME. This is the fourth development release on the way to GNOME 3.0, which the developers currently plan to release on 4 April; before that, they intend to release two betas and a release candidate (RC). In their release email, the developers indicate that the completed version is slowly coming into view; they also say that they have made many major improvements to the shell, to the Control Center and to various other GNOME components.

Meanwhile, a blog posting by Richard Hughes has sparked a variety of discussions in the GNOME world. In passing, the developer of the GNOME power manager mentioned in his posting that notebooks running under GNOME 3 will automatically switch to standby (Suspend to RAM / S3) when users close the lid. The behaviour control option available in current versions is apparently no longer going to be available in the GNOME 3 Control Center. Hughes says this decision was made by the designers and is probably a step in the right direction. Other users have challenged the developer's opinion in further blog postings and in comments to his posting (for example 1, 2). Some users have pointed out that this would interrupt downloads or chat connections. Perhaps these responses will make the developers rethink their decision in the remaining two months.

Amidst all the discussions, the main topic of Hughes' blog posting was slightly pushed to the sidelines. The developer has asked users to submit DMI information about their notebook if the notebook overheats when running with the lid closed (for instance during presentations). This information is to be entered into a blacklist so that the GNOME power manager can disallow such modes of operation to prevent damage to the hardware.
