The GNOME development team has released version 2.32 of the GNOME desktop for GNU / Linux and Unix. It includes numerous bug fixes, but relatively few significant new features because many GNOME developers have moved on to working on GNOME 3. Version 3 of GNOME was originally scheduled for release about now, but in July the release date was put back by six months to April 2011 because the GNOME release team felt it wasn't sufficiently mature.

Details of major changes can be found in the release notes. They include improvements to the Empathy instant messenger client, which is now able to combine multiple IM contacts into a 'metacontact', so that friends who are active on several IM networks show up as a single entry in the buddy list. Document viewer Evince can now speak SyncTeX and has better support for creating comments in PDF files. GNOME's Nautilus file manager has a new dialogue to help users fix file conflicts when copying or moving files and Totem now automatically activates the de-interlacer to improve video quality when playing interlaced videos.

The GNOME development team is planning a maintenance release in late October to fix any bugs in 2.32.0. With the advent of GNOME 3 in spring that should then signal the end of GNOME 2.x. GNOME 3 is based on GTK 3 and includes new interface functionality, such as the GNOME shell.
