GNOME Logo The GNOME release team has announced the availability of the first beta for what will become version 2.30 of GNOME. The 2.29.90 development release of the GNOME desktop environment for Linux and Unix marks the beginning of the UI freeze and includes several bug fixes, changes and updates.

The first beta features changes to the Brasero CD/DVD burning application, the Cheese webcam program and language translation updates. Other notable changes include updates to the Evolution mail, address book and calendaring client, the Empathy instant messaging program and various GNOME desktop fixes. The developers also note that, as with all development releases, use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised. Users testing the release are encouraged to report any bugs that they encounter.

More details about the development release can be found in the release announcement, release notes, and in the NEWS file. The sources for GNOME 2.29.90 are available from the project's FTP page. The final version of GNOME 2.30 is scheduled to arrive on the 31st of March, 2010.
