The GNOME developers have announced the release of the penultimate point update to GNOME 2.26. The second point release of the free open source desktop environment includes a large number of translation updates, several bug fixes and documentation changes.

The next and final point update, GNOME 2.26.3, is expected to be released on the first of July. The GNOME development team are currently working on the next development branch that will become GNOME 2.28, scheduled for release at the end of September. GNOME 2.30, which will be re-numbered as 3.0.0, will be a major overhaul of the user interface and is expected to arrive in March of 2010.

A list of distributions that use GNOME as their Default Desktop can be found on the distributions page of the GNOME web site.
