AdaCore has released the latest version of its open source Ada development environment, GNAT GPL 2011. This includes the GNAT compiler, GNAT Programming Studio (the actual IDE) and the GNATbench plugin for the Eclipse IDE. Although designed for the Ada programming language, it also support C/C++.

The 2011 version promises a whole series of updates and new features. According to AdaCore's Marketing Director Jamie Ayre, it will allow the use of initial language features from Ada 2012, recently submitted to the ISO for adoption as a standard. The IDE editor has seen improvements in its C/C++ support, source editing and usability. The system also offers an enhanced GtkAda interface with new widgets and integration with the Cairo graphics library, and, better support for Ada constructs under .NET.

Lego MINDSTORMS fans may also want to take a look at GNAT GPL 2011 – this new version of the development environment offers full support for the Lego NXT platform. In particular developers can now address the system's audio and I2C sensors.

GNAT GPL 2011 is available to download free of charge under GPLv3 and is available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux-based systems. AdaCore also produces the commercially supported GNAT Pro Ada, C++ and C products.
