GIMP logo The GIMP development team has released version 2.7.4 of its open source GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) image editing software. Aimed at developers, testers and early adopters, the fourth point update to the 2.7.x branch is an unstable development snapshot that fixes bugs found in the previous release and includes changes to the user interface.

Tweaks to the graphical user interface (GUI) in GIMP 2.7.4 include improvements to the transform tools' undo strings to make them more descriptive, updates to stacking for canvas items and, in single-window mode, a close button has been added to image tabs. The developers say that improvements to GTK+ for Mac will mean that "GIMP is finally going to be first class citizen on that platform". Other changes include the addition of basic paint dynamics to the PDB interface, plugin updates and fixes for various issues in the application's core.

The 2.7.x series is the project's unstable development branch which is building towards the next stable release, version 2.8. Depending on the bugs found in this version, the developers say that 2.7.4 "could be the last version before 2.8 release candidates and 2.8 itself". According to the official schedule for GIMP 2.8, the team is currently targeting the end of January 2012 for a final release; GIMP 2.8 had been expected to arrive in late November of this year.

Further information about the development release, including a full list of changes, can be found in the GIMP developer mailing announcement and in the release notes. The GPLv2 licensed sources for GIMP 2.7.4 are available to download from the project's site. As with all development releases, use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised. The current stable release of GIMP is version 2.6.11 from October 2010.
