GIMP Logo With the release of developer version 2.7.1, GIMP users and early adopters have been given the opportunity to preview the new features of the free image editing software's forthcoming stable 2.8 release. The most important improvement is the graphical user interface (GUI), which has undergone a thorough overhaul. For instance, it now includes a single-window mode which doesn't display elements such as the tools or layers menus in separate windows next to the image window, instead lining these elements up alongside the image in the same window.

GIMP 2.7.1 also uses fewer windows in other places, for example when entering text: Instead of having to enter text in a separate window and selecting a font and other formatting elements in yet another window, users can now directly insert text into their image.

More details about the release can be found in the release notes. The sources are available to download from the GIMP project's FTP servers (FTP link) as well as the various mirrors; Ubuntu users can find them in the PPA repositories together with binaries for versions 9.04 and 10.04.
