Skywriter Logo Mozilla's Skywriter project has been given a new home at Ajax.org. Talks among the developers of both communities reportedly lead to the Mozilla Foundation's online editor being merged into Ace, a JavaScript editor in the Cloud9 IDE at Ajax.org. Cloud9 is a GPL-licensed hosted service, currently in beta, which runs on a NodeJS server. Originally called Bespin, Skywriter was created for developing Firefox extensions about two years ago, and was renamed when it moved to the GitHub hosting service in October 2010.

Unlike Skywriter, which uses the <canvas> HTML element, Ace uses the Document Object Model (DOM) for rendering; this makes the editor compatible with a wider range of browsers. The developers said that making the editor part of the Cloud9 IDE also brings the "development in the cloud" idea forward. This is has become less of a focus for the Mozilla Foundation, they said in their announcement. As part of the merger, Ajax.org has agreed to relicense the entire Ace package under a triple licence (MPL, LGPL, GPL), making it easier for developers to use the editor in commercial projects.
