FreeNAS Logo The FreeNAS developers have announced the availability of version 0.7.1 of FreeNAS (code name Shere), a FreeBSD-based Network-attached storage (NAS) UNIX-like server operating system. FreeNAS includes a full Web configuration graphical user interface (GUI) and supports the FTP, NFS, CIFS (Samba), AFP, rsync and iSCSI protocols and software RAID (0,1,5). Support for the ZFS (Zettabyte File System) file system was added in the previous release.

The 0.7 maintenance release includes several translation updates and improvements to the Web GUI and features, for example, support for custom scripts in email reports and serial consoles for headless systems. In addition to a number of bug fixes, the update features several major changes and updates to the included components, such as version 1.92 of the Transmission BitTorrent client, PHP 5.2.12 and version 1.4.26 of the lighttpd web server. Before upgrading to the latest release, the developers advise users to first back up the configuration file, system disk and all of their data.

More details about the release can be found in the change log and release announcement. FreeNAS 0.7.1 is available to download for 32 and 64-bit systems and documentation is provided. Once downloaded, it can be installed on a Compact Flash card, USB flash drive, hard drive or run as a LiveCD that saves the configuration file to a USB drive or floppy disk. FreeNAS is released under the BSD license.
