Volker Theile, a FreeNAS developer, has announced the release of version 0.69.1 of FreeNAS (code-named Omnius). FreeNAS is a FreeBSD-based Network-attached storage (NAS) UNIX like server operating system that supports the FTP, NFS, CIFS (Samba), AFP, RSYNC and iSCSI protocols. FreeNAS also supports software RAID (0,1,5) and has a full Web configuration graphical user interface (GUI).

The 0.69.1 release includes several changes, updates and a dozen bug fixes. Major changes in the update include upgrades to Samba 3.0.34, Transmission 1.51, ProFTPD 1.3.2, mDNSResponder 1.08.6, nut 2.4.1 and bash 4.0.10. The Transmission BitTorrent client settings for peer port, peer forwarding, encryption mode and max upload/download bandwidth can now be set using the FreeNAS Web GUI. The release now has the ability to mount UDF ISO images and device I/O statistics have been added to the 'Status|Disks' page.

According to the change log, users running versions prior to 0.69b4 cannot upgrade to 0.69.1 if they have chosen the embedded OS/DATA installation mode. These users are advised to back up their data and perform a fresh installation.

More details about the release can be found in the Change Log. FreeNAS 0.69.1 is available to download and can be installed on a Compact Flash card, USB flash drive, hard drive or run as a LiveCD that saves the configuration file to a USB drive or floppy disk.
