FreeBSD 7.2 Beta released & Debian FreeBSD

The FreeBSD project developers have announced the availability of the first beta of FreeBSD 7.2, a point update to FreeBSD 7.1 released in early January. Changes in the 7.2 release include an updated bce(4) network driver and "significant work" done on the threading libraries that fixes several "major issues". The FreeBSD developers are asking users to test the release and provide feedback so that any major bugs can be addressed before the final release, scheduled for the first week of May.

The 7.2 beta is available to download. More details about the release can be found in the Release Engineering Information.

Beyond its own update efforts, FreeBSD may soon benefit the Debian Linux community as well. The Debian developers have announced that they have ported the GNU C library on top of a FreeBSD kernel giving Debian users a choice of version over the Linux kernel. Debian GNU/kFreeBSD is available for the i386 and amd64 architectures in the Debian archive and is considered to be "unstable and experimental".
