FreeBSD 7.1 released

The FreeBSD logo The FreeBSD project have released FreeBSD 7.1, an update to the FreeBSD 7 series of stable releases. Among the highlights of the release is support for DTrace inside the kernel, which has been imported from OpenSolaris. DTrace is a powerful tracing framework that allows developers and administrators to monitor the performance of a running operating system to a very fine level of detail.

Other changes include a switch to the ULE Scheduler as default, to make better use of multiple processors and cores, an improved NFS lock manager, a boot loader that can boot from USB devices and GPT labelled media, and system calls for binding to CPUs.

Other updates include refreshing KDE to version 3.5.10 and Gnome to version 2.22.3. Full details of the changes are available in the release notes and details of the various images and download sites are in the announcement.
