ForgeRock announces OpenDJ LDAP directory service

ForgeRock has announced OpenDJ, a Java based open source directory server as part of its I₃ platform. OpenDJ, a standard compliant LDAP directory server built for scalability and stability, is a based on OpenDS, a project initially developed by Sun Microsystems, and ForgeRock has announced that a key OpenDS developer, Ludovic Poitou, has joined its ranks. ForgeRock CEO Lasse Andresen said "It's a real delight to work with him again". Enterprise subscriptions to OpenDJ are available now from ForgeRock.

OpenDJ 2.4 beta 1, now available from opendj.net, offers ten new features that distinguish it from the last version of OpenDS 2.2, including support for collective attributes (RFC 3671, RFC 3672), improved import performance, optimised replication traffic routing with lower overhead and support for disk space monitoring in the server to avoid unexpected behaviour on full disks.

ForgeRock's strategy officer, Simon Phipps, noted how the open source status of the OpenDS software had allowed ForgeRock to help protect companies' investment in infrastructure despite a strategy change by the original creator of the software, Sun Microsystems, who were acquired by Oracle. OpenDJ is, like OpenDS, available under the CDDL licence.
