The Spanish company Fluendo has announced the release of its own legal DVD player for Linux. As with other products from Fluendo, the DVD player is built on the open source GStreamer multimedia framework, which the company funds, develops and maintains. In addition to full DVD playback and menu support, the player includes Dolby Digital pass-through, Dolby Digital 5.1 output and stereo downmixing support, subtitle and CSS encryption support. Support for remote controls through LIRC (Linux Infrared Remote Control) is not included in the release, however, it is on the roadmap and should be included in the next release.

According to Fluendo CSO Muriel Moscardini, "The market was missing this legal solution based upon the GStreamer framework. Fluendo DVD player provides end users with high quality standards, certified by Dolby Digital and DVD, including all patent licenses from MPEG LA and Dolby".

Fluendo DVD Player is available to download for 32 and 64-bit Linux systems and cots $27.99 (€19.99). According to the product FAQ page, a version of the DVD player for OpenSolaris will be added soon.
