Java Version 7 is the first version of the JDK (Java Development Kit) that Oracle has made available for Mac OS X. The JDK7 Mac OS X Port Developer Preview is based on OpenJDK development work contributed by Apple, and it requires a Mac with Intel processor; older PowerPC (PPC) systems are not supported.

The software has been tested under Mac OS X 10.6.8 and 10.7.0 and is said to contain very few known issues. Apple has said that a forthcoming Mac OS X update will support all the APIs that are required by the JDK. Until that update is made available, any incompatibilities can be resolved by applying a temporary patch (Apple Developer ID required) that the company has made available for developers.

Developers can download the developer preview of JDK 7 for Mac OS X free of charge, but they must accept the Pre-Production Software Evaluation Agreement for Java SE.
