openSUSE Logo The openSUSE project release team have published the first milestone release of version 12.1 of their openSUSE operating system. The development preview is the first of six planned milestone releases for the popular Linux distribution – the next of which is expected to arrive on 16 June – which will be followed by two release candidates. The final version of openSUSE 12.1 is scheduled for release on 11 November.

Aimed at developers, testers and early adopters, openSUSE 12.1 Milestone 1 is based on the latest 2.6.39 Linux kernel and features a major update to GNOME version 3.0 and a "minor version upgrade to KDE 4.6.3". As expected, other changes include a number of bug fixes and various package updates, including upgrades for GCC, glibc, Perl and Python.

The developers warn users that the first milestone is "far from stable", but is "a good starting point for further development". As with all development releases, use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised. Users testing the release are encouraged to provide feedback and report any bugs that they find.

Further information about the development milestone can be found in the official release announcement; a list of the most annoying bugs is also provided. The first milestone for openSUSE 12.1 is available to download for 32- and 64-bit x86 systems as a DVD or LiveCD image from the project's downloads area. The latest stable release is openSUSE 11.4 from early March.
