The first beta of OpenSuse Linux 11.1 has been released by its developers. The release provides a foretaste of the final version of the distribution, due for release on 18th December. It is available to download for testing as a DVD image. As is traditional for OpenSuse, the OpenSuse Wiki provides details of the most annoying currently outstanding bugs.

The beta includes Linux kernel version 2.6.27rc5, Xen 3.3.1 RC virtualisation, GCC 4.3.2, X.org 7.4 and the OpenOffice 3.0 release candidate. Two versions of the KDE desktop environment, 3.5.10 and 4.1 are included, and OpenSuse has also added Gnome 2.24, development of which has recently been frozen and is expected to be released this coming Wednesday. Window manager KWIN, which uses compositing by default, provides the 3D effects in KDE 4.1. The developers have adopted SELinux security extensions in parallel to the AppArmour.
