The KDE developer team has released the first beta version of the upcoming version 4.2 (KDE 4.1.80) of the Linux desktop. In addition to the obligatory source code, there are already binary packages for OpenSuse, as well as an OpenSuse 11.0-based live CD, which offers a glimpse of the new KDE version. The final version of 4.2.0 is slated for a January release.

Most of the updates are related to design and desktop effects; compositing is now enabled by default where enabled, new desktop effects have been added and the desktop interface has been refined. Plasma for KDE desktop has been improved. For example, users can now directly embed Google desktop gadgets on the desktop. Developers have also fixed numerous bugs. The first beta version of KDE 4.2 is intended specifically for reviewers and testers who want to help with beta testing. The KDE developers are discouraging production use by other users.
