The openSUSE project has released the first and final beta version of openSUSE 12.3 with Linux 3.7.1 and a KDE 4.10 release candidate. By the time openSUSE 12.3 is released – currently scheduled for 13 March – the final version of KDE 4.10 should be included. The release uses LibreOffice 3.6 as its office suite; packages of LibreOffice 4, which is also currently under development, will be available from the repositories, but this version will not be installed by default.

Along with the 3.7 kernel, the beta also upgrades to the improved LLVM 3.2 compiler infrastructure. The PCMan and Thunar file managers, for the LXDE and Xfce desktops respectively, are both included with new versions. Thunar has gained tab support and now checks for space in the location the user intends to copy files to before starting the actual copy operation. Zypper and PackageKit have also been updated, and several other stability improvements have been implemented in the distribution.

To celebrate the release, SUSE is hosting what it calls a "BetaPizzaParty" at its offices in Nuremberg on 30 January and encourages the openSUSE community to host similar parties on the same date all over the world. Currently, the developers are involved in the 12.3 Polish Hackathon which is taking place today and tomorrow at the company's headquarters with the purpose of working out the last kinks in the code base and to get it in shape for the distribution's pre-release freeze starting on 5 February. Interested developers can join the Hackathon through a Google+ Hangout.

The openSUSE 12.3 beta is available from the distribution's web site for 32- and 64-bit systems as an installable DVD image with the GNOME desktop or as separate live CD images with GNOME or KDE. A minimal image for installation over the network can also be downloaded from the same page.
