Acquia has announced Drupal Gardens, a hosted "software as a service" version of the open source Drupal CMS. Acquia was founded by the leader of the Drupal CMS project, Dries Buytaert, to provide commercial support for the content management system. Buytaert previewed the service at Drupalcon Paris 2009. Originally code-named Acquia Gardens, the new offering aims to provide Drupal as a service, making it easier for users to use the CMS system by relieving them of the installation and configuration issues.

In a blog posting, Buytaert describes the previewed version as "pre-alpha". He demonstrated one feature at the conference, the theme builder. This allows a Drupal Gardens user to create a theme without writing HTML, CSS or JavaScript directly. Drupal Gardens is based on the in-development Drupal 7 and Acquia plans to make the service available at the beginning of next year; the company will notify people who have signed up at drupalgardens.com when an alpha testing programme begins. Acquia also announced the availability of Acquia Hosting, a managed cloud based hosting platform for Drupal developers and users.
