VectorLinux logo Nearly eight months after the 32-bit edition arrived, a 64-bit edition of version 7.0 of the Slackware-based operating system has been announced by the VectorLinux developers. Like the project's Standard edition, the 64-bit release of VectorLinux 7.0 – referred to as "VLocity Linux 64-7.0" – includes support for DVD playback, audio and video codecs, and plugins for multimedia and Java support out of the box.

The Slackware derivative features a desktop based on the older Xfce 4.8 release with a custom theme and artwork (4.10 was published at the end of April), and uses the Wicd network connection manager for wired and wireless networking. The GIMP and Inkscape graphics editors, the Firefox and Opera web browsers, the Pidgin IM client and the Brasero disc burning application are among the applications bundled with the distribution.

Further information about the new version can be found in the forum release announcement; at the time of writing, an official news announcement has yet to be made and the project's official downloads page does not show the 64-bit release. VectorLinux 7.0 for 64-bit systems is available to download from the Oregon State University Open Source Lab, which also hosts a number of other open source projects.
