Firefox version 3 goes on general release at six pm today, the 17th of June, Mozilla, and the developers of the strongest competitor to Microsoft's Internet Explorer web browser are aiming to establish a record for the maximum number of downloads for a new version of software in a 24 hour period following release.

According to a BBC report, Paul Kim, head of marketing at Mozilla, said “It's a global effort to make history,”.

More than 1.6 million people worldwide have already indicated they will be downloading the new version. In the UK so far some 68,000 people have pledged to download the new browser. When Firefox 2.0 was released on the 24th of October the software was downloaded 1.6 million times. Current Firefox users with auto update enabled should contribute significantly to the final count.
