Released on the 17th of June, version 3 of the Firefox open source web browser was downloaded more than eight million times in the first 24 hours. The previous version, Firefox 2, had 1.6 million downloads on the first day of its release – a figure surpassed by Firefox 3 after only five hours. To mark the release of the new browser, Mozilla announced a "Download Day", calling users to attempt a world record for software downloads within the first 24 hours for the Guinness Book of Records. According to Mozilla, Guinness employees are currently checking the world record attempt.

Three days after the release Mozilla had registered about 13.5 million downloads of Firefox 3. During the record attempt most of the copies were downloaded by users in the US, who accounted for about 3.25 million downloads. Runners up were Germany – about 850,000 downloads, Japan (515,000), the UK (363,810), Spain (353,000) France (344,200), Canada (295,000) and Brazil (231,000). In 16 countries the total number of downloads was above 100,000. Mozilla provides a running download counter web page for selected countries.

Immediately after downloads began, Mozilla reported about 2 gigabits per second of pure HTTP traffic and around 13 gigabits per second of download traffic – peaking at 20 Gbits per second – and more than 14,000 downloads per minute. Firefox 3 downloads peaked at 17,000 downloads per minute, which corresponds to more than 283 downloads per second. The browser is currently being downloaded about 2,500 times per minute. So far, Mozilla's servers have supplied 83 terabytes of data in total. Mozilla's CEO John Lilly reports that the market share of Firefox increased to about 4 per cent worldwide within the first 24 hours. According to Net Applications it has now reached more than 5 per cent.
