Firebug, the popular Firefox extension for debugging and profiling JavaScript, has been updated to version 1.3. Improvements to Firebug include, a re-implementation of the the Net panel, used for viewing what connections the browser is making, added functionality and a fix for rendering problems. The Script panel has also had its rendering performance improved so that large JavaScript files are more efficiently displayed. Other additions include the ability to see a variables scope when Firebug hits a breakpoint and a reworking of the Console and Commandline panels. One of the developers, in announcing the release, noted that Firebug is now developing better test coverage and that a new Tracing panel has made debugging easier.

Firebug 1.3.0 is available to download from addons.mozilla.org. FireBug 1.3.0 is compatible with Firefox 3.0, with Firefox 3.0.5 recommended. It is not compatible with the in-development Firefox 3.1 though. Firebug 1.4 will support Firefox 3.1, but is only in alpha at the moment, with a beta promised soon. Details of the new versions are on getfirebug.com's releases page. Firebug is available under a BSD licence.
