openSUSE logo With the final version due in mid-September, the openSUSE developers have announced the second release candidate for version 12.2 of their Linux distribution. The two weeks since the first RC release have seen "a flurry" of last minute fixes in higher level packages as the core of 12.2 has been "stabilized and locked". The focus now moves to final polish and fixes for release. One late change to the system has been the removal of many manuals and books from the DVD release of openSUSE to save space; a new "books" pattern can be installed separately for users who want them.

The 12.2 RC2 release includes low-level fixes to systemd and udev, kernel firmware and PCI updates and GRUB2 fixes and branding and high level fixes, to MySQL, YaST, graphics libraries and apache. Updated packages include postfix, kvm, gcc, llvm, php and Python (updated to 3.2.3). There were also fixes applies to both KDE and GNOME desktops and applications, and LibreOffice was updated.

OpenSUSE 12.2 will see the distribution switch over to using the GRUB2 boot manager and move to using a Plymouth-based start up process. It will arrive with Linux kernel 3.4 and updated desktops (GNOME 3.4.1, KDE 4.8.4 and Xfce 4.10). The release date was originally set for mid-June, but was postponed to mid-September after a "wake up call" over the project's release methodology and organisation. The second release candidate is available to download as a DVD ISO, Live GNOME CD, Live KDE CD and as a network installer. Current issues are listed on the most annoying bugs page and the developers ask testers to report bugs after searching Bugzilla.
