Final draft for a PHP release process presented

The PHP release process is not always without controversy among developers, and discussions around new language features or even additional forks are raised on the PHP internals mailing list again and again; coupled with protracted disputes, this has frequently led to uncertainty. A transparent release process is intended to remedy this situation and provide more security in terms of planning.

The final version of the corresponding Request for Comments (RFC) has now been presented by PHP Core Team member Pierre Joye. Joye points out that even this final version of the RFC isn't set in stone, and that it should be considered as a starting point. Among other things, the draft proposes guidelines for the actual release cycle and a separate RFC process for new features and extensions. A transparent selection process is proposed that will strengthen the role of the release management team.

There is currently a lot of discussion about the draft on the internals mailing list; Pierre Joye has advocated a rapid approval of the current RFC so that it can be used to define the life span of PHP 5.3, and to ensure a speedy release of version 5.4.
