Qt logo The beta and final releases of version 5.0 of the Qt cross-platform application and user interface framework have been delayed. According to Lars Knoll, director of Qt R&D at Nokia, it was decided to move the beta and final release dates to give the Qt Project developers "a bit more time to polish things".

In the mailing list announcement, Knoll says that, "While I think it's very important to get Qt 5.0 out of the door as soon as possible, we should not release it without first getting it's quality to a very high standard." He goes on to note that there is still "a lot of work to be done", and that "three big items" are currently blocking them. These include getting the binary packages and installers working, completing the documentation modularisation and additional improvements to the platform plugins.

A beta version of Qt 5.0 was originally expected to arrive in April or May, with the final release being published by the end of June. Now, Knoll says that there may be a second alpha and that the developers are planning a first beta with "a hard API freeze" by the start of this year's Qt Contributors Summit; that will take place from 21 to 23 June in Berlin. Depending upon the feedback from the community, a second beta may be also added. The developers are now aiming for the middle to the end of August for the final version of Qt 5.0; at the time of writing, the project's roadmap has yet to be updated to reflect these changes.

Qt 5.0 will be the project's first major release since Qt 4.0 in June 2005. A full list of all of the planned changes and new features can be found in the Qt 5 Features document. The current stable release of Qt is version 4.8.1 from the end of March.
